Thee Ghana Football Association (GFA) officially confirmed that the Black Stars will establish their high-performance training camp in the
United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This strategic decision, announced by GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum, marks a critical phase in Ghana’s attempt to surpass its historic 2010 quarter-final achievement on the world stage.
The choice of a U.S.-based camp is both a logistical necessity and a tactical move. Under FIFA competition regulations, all participating nations must arrive in their designated host country at least five days before their opening fixture. For Ghana, this means the squad will be stationed in the U.S. no later than June 12, 2026, allowing for vital acclimatization before their first group match on June 17.
The 2026 Group L Campaign: A Stern Examination
The Black Stars find themselves in Group L, a pool widely regarded by analysts as one of the most competitive in the expanded 104-match tournament. Ghana will navigate a demanding travel schedule across two of the three host nations:
- June 17, 2026: Opening match against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada.
- June 23, 2026: A high-stakes clash against England at Gillette Stadium in Boston, Massachusetts.
- June 27, 2026: Final group fixture against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Elite Preparation: The March Friendlies
To ensure the squad is match-ready for the intensity of Group L, the GFA has finalized two high-profile international friendlies in Europe during the March FIFA window:
- Ghana vs. Austria: March 27, 2026, at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna.
- Ghana vs. Germany: March 30, 2026, providing a crucial test against a perennial world power.
Sports Minister Kofi Adams further confirmed that an additional two friendly matches are being finalized for late May and early June, likely to be played in the United States once the camp is officially opened.
Technical Reinforcements: The Quest for Expertise
The GFA has not only focused on physical preparation but also on mental and tactical depth. In early February 2026, the association bolstered Head Coach Otto Addo’s technical bench with five specialized appointments:
- Alain Ravera (Assistant Coach): The experienced French tactician brings a wealth of knowledge from his time with AS Monaco.
- José Daniel Martínez Alfonso (Video Analyst): A specialist in opposition scouting currently serving with MLS club Atlanta FC.
- Carlos Lozano Romero (Physiotherapist): Returns to the fold to ensure continuity in player recovery and fitness.
- Dwayne Peasah Paa Kwesi (Performance Coach): Tasked with optimizing physical conditioning for the rigorous North American climate.
Strategic Objectives
GFA President Kurt Okraku emphasized that the United States is a “strategic market” for Ghanaian football. By camping in the U.S., the GFA aims to engage with the massive Ghanaian diaspora in North America while ensuring the players are shielded from the logistical fatigue of long-haul travel between match venues in Toronto, Boston, and Philadelphia.
With the training base confirmed and the technical team expanded, the Black Stars are leaving nothing to chance as they prepare to “reload” their greatness on the world’s biggest stage.
